What Are Internet Dating Scams?

by Jessica A

Do you know about internet dating scams? If you spend any time socializing with people on the internet, you should be aware of them. The scams are terrible. Most of the time the victim ends up losing his or her hard-earned money. Oftentimes the victim is left with a bruised ego at best, a broken heart at worst. The scams usually take place on internet dating sites. It usually begins when a man or woman start talking to someone they met on one of these sits.

The scammer patiently lulls the victim into a false sense of security. They will communicate with each other long enough for the victim to develop strong feelings for the scammer. Internet dating scams usually follow this pattern: Once the scammer has gained the victim's trust, he or she will begin talking about financial troubles. They will usually make up some story about how they or a family member needs an expensive operation, or they might say that they won't be on the internet much longer because they can't afford the bills. Having grown to trust and care for the scammer, the victim usually does whatever they can do to help.

Of course, that usually means forking over some money. Usually the victim wires the money over through Western Union or a similar service. The victim thinks that they are doing something good for their friend, but most of the time after they have sent the money, they never hear back from the scammer. Sometimes there will be a 'thank you' letter and possibly a few more, but usually there isn't. Internet dating scams are a pathetic and terrible thing to do to someone, but people do it. If you utilize internet dating services, be aware and watch for 'friends' asking for money, or hinting that they need help. The best thing is to simply never send money to anyone you haven't met. Don't become a victim.
