Collectibles As An Investement

by Daniel Wright

One favorite pastime for people all around the world is collectibles. Everyone remembers Grandmas old jewelry or an uncle old books, No matter what it may be, if someone has it, someone wants it.

I remember a television program in which a man was fascinated by macaroni and cheese boxes. He collected over 100,000 of these boxes from around the globe, covering several different eras. Although this wouldn't necessarily constitute as profitable collectibles, this man clearly found value in his macaroni boxes.

There are many different reasons people begin collecting an item, maybe they mentioned they liked owls and before they knew it, friends and family members were bringing them owls back from vacation or making sure all the gifts from then on out were of an owl theme.

Some people will collect items that remind them of their childhood, such as vintage toys or dolls. Other collectors will go with brands that they know and love such as Pepsi, Budweiser, or Coca-Cola. An example of a profitable collectible would be anything with a Coca-Cola history.

There are some kinds of collectibles which will never decrease in value, and will always be eagerly sought after by collectors. The first rule of building a good collection is that the piece must bring joy to you, and be of value to you.

Finding collectibles for resale is an additional reason to collect. However, while you may initially start collecting a specific item based on current trends, you can easily find yourself with a house full of items that are no longer popular, unwanted by you or anyone else.

Collectibles as in an investment is a pretty tricky because, as with so many collecting trends nowadays, the value of your collectible may never increase. So, if you decide to buy into a trend, re-sell it when you can assure yourself a profit. Only collect what you can live with, as there's no guarantee that your collectible will sell and you might need to be prepared to live with what you bought.
