Facial Exercises: Your Secret Weapon Against Aging

by Jen Hopkins

Performing a regular regimen of face fitness can help maintain a youthful and healthy appearance. Unlike the skeletal muscles that are attached to bone, facial muscles are attached to the skin that covers them. As we age, these facial muscles start to lose their elasticity and tone, causing the skin to sag, creating wrinkles and lines.

Dedication and up most commitment are an important part of this, and the results will not occur immediately; you are going to have to really work to get results. That said, lines (especially fine lines) and sagging will be reduced eventually, and your muscle tone will be improved.

Both old people and young people can enjoy facial exercises; age doesn't matter, your face is always going to get certain wrinkles and you can do these exercises even if you're very young. They make discoloration (and puffiness) go down and make the face have a good tone and glow.

Facial exercises are not just for older people, but should be considered by younger people as well. Doing regular exercises can help reduce puffiness and discoloration around the eyes and provide the face with tone and general over all healthy glow.

When considering doing facial exercises, it's important to know that the face is made up of a complex set of facial muscles. Each set of these muscles controls a different set of motions in the face. All these muscles work in concert to allow us to smile and to exhibit any number of facial expressions.

Facial exercises can be broken down into working these different muscles sets separately and together. Before starting any facial exercises, it's important to lubricate the skin lightly with oil or water. To improve muscle tone around the eyes, a simple set of exercises should be performed. This simple exercise is done by partially winking the eye and holding it for a second. There is no need to exaggerate this notion or to scrunch the eye up. Perform fifty of these winks with each eye each day.

Strengthening mouth muscles can be done through stretching. Put your fingers inside corners of the mouth and stretch. The point of this is not to bend your mouth out of shape, but to tighten the muscles surrounding the mouth by creating pressure against the fingers. Stretch the mouth just about a fourth of an inch.

One thing that can lose a lot of tone is your neck muscles. One good way to tighten these muscles it to tilt your head back anywhere from twenty to about thirty degrees. When you do this, press your tongue to the top of your mouth cavity. If you are doing it right you will feel tension in the area under your chin. After that, tilt your chin down and keep your tongue on top of your mouth. Do this 20 to 30 times and you will eventually see a tighter neck muscle tone.

It is essential that you keep care of your face. The process of aging inevitably brings wrinkles and sagging, but these things and other problems that come with aging can be avoided if you do these exercises daily and regularly.
